'Project Runway' Season 8, Episode 13: Finale, Part 1

By Dawn Fallik It's Mondo's world. Full of crazy color, pattern and random hats. We all just skip alongside. One show left on "Project Runway" and it's Mondo, Michael, Gretchen and Andy. They have $9,000 (random) to create a 10-piece collection that's a cliche mix of something out of the box, surprise and yet, still them. And I am trying to watch this AND the Phillies-Giants game at the same time. Could we not have a challenge where the designers come up with a fashion collection based on the hottness of Jayson Werth? Tim Gunn takes to the road to visit the designers. Unlike our snuggly former PR couple Austin Scarlett and Santino Rice, there are no birthday cake outfits or sliding down banisters. Instead, Tim wears a full suit and fancy pants to Hawaii to visit Andy's giant plantation of sugar cane and magic. It's pretty damn funny how scared Tim is of catfish. He is not a man of nature. Andy's collection is inspired by Laos and is using native fabric handwoven and metal accents. He has nothing done and the show is two weeks away. Tim is worried about it becoming in a hot mess. Now Tim heads to Palm Springs, California to schmooze with Michael C. in a Caddy. Michael is inspired by the sky and feathers. Michael has made 18 looks and is in "design diarrhea." Editing! Editing! Then everyone has dinner. It's off to Denver and land of Mondo. He was inspired by the Day of the Dead and scary scary clowns. Gold painted leather shorts with a wide waistband. Black and white bubble print dress. Then there is the hot pink pompom pj shirt. It's a big no. And finally, off to Portland, Oregon and land of Gretchen, queen of grouchy. Gretchen says she came home to a relationship that ended and an empty house and busted bank account. Which is sad. Except that she's mean. So, um, karma says hello? Too much? She's using western roots and playing with safari but sophisticated lines in leather and knitwear. And a silk bloomer aka a diaper. Orange juice toasts all around. Back in New York, Tim Gunn shows up with a little bag. They all win a resort vacation. What? They haven't done anything yet. To determine the final three, they have to present three looks to the judges — two from their collection and a new look they have to create ASAP with $300. Tim tells everyone to carry on — except Michael C., whom he tells "not to choke." Which effectively freaks Michael C. out. Today's judges: Nina, Michael Kors and Heidi. Mondo's screenprinting collection tried to be more neutral with pops of color accessories. Kors loves the brown/black checkered skirt with a yellow belt. Heidi loves the black/white bubble dress. Nina loves the boldness but does not love the polka dot dress because it's a little wacky. Andy wanted to play on structure of statues. They were all surprised that his green pleated outfit was new. Nina says it's very bare with two evening looks and a bathing suit and is looking for more range. Their martian headdresses also set Heidi back. Michael C. wants to show that he can create structured, detailed pieces. Kors likes the effortless movement of the dress. Heidi liked the Mr. It top, which is sort of fringey. Nina doesn't understand why everything is in the same color. They aren't thrilled by the boxy feathered skirt which doesn't do a body good. Gretchen wanted to represent jewelry design, knitwear and a casual silhouette. Nina was bored and says it's crunchy granola. She wonders where the Birkenstocks are with a linen sack dress. Heidi thinks it's all great but they should be in high heels. Kors thinks it doesn't look expensive. And yet, Gretchen is in the final three. We have no explanation. We are bitter that the judges seem to be hating her work, but keep giving her a pass. Mondo is also in, to no one's surprise. It's down to Andy and Michael C. Andy is in and Michael C. is out. Poor Michael C. who is so sad. His little puppy head hangs down. I want to give him a hug. He took so much abuse this whole season and didn't design one Mrs. Roper dress. Let the boy in. Jeez. He's really losing it and the other three just sit there. Finally Gretchen gives him a hug. C'mon, really? But there are no miracles on PR this time. So we'll go on to next week where odds are what, 10-1 that Mondo wins? Next week - Finale! And Jessica Simpson guest judges. She is not wearing mom jeans....
